Foreign residents in Japan find these pretty odd and confusing at times, but their scavenging does actually serve a purpose. Publicly accessible landfills and scrapyards aren't very common, and it's not acceptable to toss large items and electronics into the regular trash, so a truck like this trolling through a Tokyo neighborhood (or anywhere, nationwide) could be exactly what's needed to ditch that old cassette player or broken down rice cooker!
